About Butch

Hey There:

I was 11 years old when my dad gave me a beat up Yashika D, a few rolls of Tri-X and sent me into the world (actually, he told me to go outside and play).

I had no idea how it worked, where the film went or what to do with the exposed roll. But these were little problems.

I returned a week later, convinced I had captured the secrets of the universe on film.

I had not.

But I kept trying for the next 30+ years.

I attended Cal State Fullerton in Southern California. It was that or my mom threatened to throw me out of the house.

A few years later I landed a job at Argus Publishers and worked as an associate editor on Guide to Muscle Cars, Popular Hotrodding and VW&Porshe (aka european car) magazines. I was blessed working for a guy named Greg Brown who served as my mentor and genuine friend. His gentle yet firm encouragement shaped me into something useful.

Fresh out of school with a degree in English (big money-maker that English) and Photojournalism, I promptly began tending bar and reaping the ensuing rewards. The first 2  years of college were great. The next 3 not so much. But my last year kicked ass. Technically, I should be a doctor but I slept through that class.

I spent the next 2 decades traveling, mostly to Europe and Japan where I served as the overseas liason. I got paid to drive, photograph and write about the hottest cars in the world. I also managed to rack up 1.2 million mile with Lufthansa (mom at United Airlines was very proud).

Yes, it was every bit as awesome as it sounds. I still have difficulty believing some of it.

But 20+ years on the road was enough. I moved into the editor’s chair and remained largely chained to a desk. Seven years later I went solo and began doing agency work (Toyota, VW, Ferrari and Lamborghini).

In my spare time I’m a totally un-licensed, amatuer StuntMan and Explosives Enthusiast. That I still have all my fingers is truly amazing.

I’ve photographed pretty much everything from fast cars to cataract surgery, DeHavillands to detergents. And I’ve loved all of it.

While I am technically proficient, I’m also very fast, a rarity for most photogs. Thanks to decades shooting editorial material, I’ve become versed in the art of making something from virtually nothing.

Bidrawn is one of the only shooters who is really, really good and really, really fast. He’s saved my photo budget more than a few times.
