Cars

My experience with automotive photography began in 1988 when I landed an associate editor postion at Argus Publishers. My boss sent me to shoot a tarted-up Volkswagen Fox with simple intructions: make it look good.

At the light table the next day, Editor Greg Brown said “Wow…this is really terrible.” Following a pause that felt like 3 days, he added: “Shoot it again.” So I did with results even worse.

“Shoot it again” said Editor Brown.

I cried during the third shoot. I also learned a few things, basic stuff like making sure to avoid parking lot spikes and inebriated college boys with mad projectile vomit skills.

The results however were almost OK. Not OK or decent or good or excellent but a step up from terrible. Hey man, I’ll take it.

I like knowing how things work. That often requires taking things apart. Hands dirty appreciation.

I’ve always wanted to see the gears inside the machine. How they fit together underneath.

You wanna get really good at something.  Fail at it 100 times or so.

At least you’ll learn what not to do.

It’s been said a photographer’s first 10,000 pictures are his worst.

The luck factor usually plays itself by then. I know a lot of great photogs. None considers himself lucky.

I learned the science of photography while using a Sinar 8x10 view camera. The damn thing weighed 32 lbs and its bellows were more gaffer tape than bellows but its Angenieux type s21 glass was exceptional.

I don’t think any program in existence is capable of replicating that French-built 50mm lens.

Vivamus laxo? What the hell does that mean? You’d think after 4 years of Latin (in a Catholic HS no less) I would know.  Nope. Father DePhillips woud be so dissapointed.
